Neuro-Affective Touch
“Touch is the foundation of our relational experience.”
NeuroAffective Touch is a way of working with the body through touch, alongside conversation.
When we are young and left alone too often with overwhelming experiences, the body may learn to manage through bracing or numbing. This can live on in the body as we grow into adulthood, showing up as a stomach that stays clenched, a chest that won’t open, breath that won’t deepen, shoulders that won’t soften. This can also lead to various uncomfortable sensations in the body and contribute to the profound experience of feeling unsafe or disconnected from the world. Talking helps, but often can’t reach these deeper physiological adaptations.
NeuroAffective Touch offers a gentle, relational way to work with these deeper patterns. Through attentive presence, mindful touch, and awareness of the body’s responses, we can begin to understand what words alone cannot describe. This work can support the nervous system in organizing and releasing the survival adaptations that were necessary in our earliest years of life. This work is paced carefully with an emphasis on choice, consent, and developing a greater sense of safety from within.
A session begins with conversation. We check in about how you’re arriving, what’s on your mind, and what your body is telling you. When it feels right, we decide together how to work. Some people prefer to stay seated, side by side, while I offer a hand on the shoulder or upper back. Others choose to lie down on a comfortable table (fully clothed), where I can offer slow, steady touch to support the body. If you are uncomfortable with direct touch, we can also use small, warm, weighted pillows that offer a semblance of touch. We both pay attention to the body’s responses through verbal feedback and direct observation. The intent is to attune to the cues of the body, to provide containment and the felt sense of support, and to create an opportunity for co-regulation so that the body and nervous system can return to organization through flow, integration, and connection.
